“Stroke: A Rehabilitation Physician’s Perspective”

Come and learn stroke statistics, the major types, the early signs, risk factors, and prevention of strokes.  They will also stress the importance of getting to the hospital quickly if you suspect a stroke, for medication and intervention, for the best outcome! The recovery in all settings will be discussed.  There are also stroke support groups and ways that the family can support a stroke survivor.  Finally, sharing equipment, bracing, and home health care options.

Kathy Polum, RN

Stroke Program Coordinator at Bellin Hospital


Dr. Knapp is on the stroke team at Bellin and Aurora. He evaluates and admits stroke survivors that will benefit from intense rehabilitation to the inpatient rehab unit.  He works with therapist to improve functional deficits and return patients to independence.

Kathy Polum is a registered nurse that coordinates the Stroke Program at Bellin Hospital and works with the stroke patients and families. One of her main roles is to educate the patients and community on stroke prevention.
