Ss Edward and Isidore Church

Lenten Message from Fr. Dave

The Lenten Season marks the 40 days of preparation for us Christians for the celebration of Easter. It is a time of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. These practices are meant to focus us on the importance of God in our lives and how we can find God present with us in the form of our brothers and sisters.

When we fast, we are reminded that earthly foods and pleasures are not the main priority of our lives. We are primarily people who love and who serve God and others. Only love  and service will bring us real happiness and peace in this world.

Prayer reminds us that we are all accountable to God for our actions. We may desire to live without any thought of accountability, but we are not God! Prayer puts us in touch with our Lord and helps us to realize that we can all do better to live and act more like Jesus.

Almsgiving makes us realize our blessings are not to be selfishly hoarded, but generously shared with those in need. We are just stewards of our talents and possessions because they are given to us by God. Misers miss out on both the great joy of sharing what they have and of bringing joy to others by gifting them with unexpected blessings.

Lent is not meant to be approached with dread and loathing, focusing only on the negative and sacrificial. It is the Church's annual 40 day retreat meant to reorient us to God and to God's priorities for our lives. May we pass through these days with joy and expectation. May we seek to deepen our relationship with Jesus so that our celebration of Easter will be all the more holy and enthusiastic!
